How I Bleach My Hair at Home

DIY Bleach Blonde Hair

With quarantine happening all over the world right now, and many states finding themselves in a lockdown, beauty services are seemingly non-essential. However, this is not my first rodeo when it comes to doing hair. I’ve been doing my own hair at home for about 6 years now and with that came A LOT of trial and error. Bleach means business, but if you know your hair and understand the process, it’s not all that scary.

For a while, I used a box dye (I know) and it gave me the perfect color every time, along with being basically foolproof. This is the one I used. But I started buying everything separately for a few reasons: it’s cheaper, it lasts longer, you can decide how much to mix up so you have little to no waste, and you can totally customize your color.

For my routine dye process I use the following products:
Prism Lites Violet Lightener
20 Volume Developer (either creme or clear is up to you)
Wella Color Charm Toner in T18 (lightest ash blonde)
coconut oil
mixing bowl
tint brush

How I Get Platinum Blonde Hair At Home:

coconut oil on my roots
  1. Begin by melting some coconut oil in the microwave for 10 seconds and saturating your roots (or all hair if you’re doing an all-over dye)
  2. Section hair off into two parts, I just split mine down the middle
  3. Follow the mixing instructions and combine bleach powder and developer
  4. Apply the mixture to the regrowth and try not to overlap on pre-lightened hair
  5. Work in small layers going down your head, making sure to coat the top and under part of the section
  6. I use a handheld mirror to get the back of my head and hard to reach places so I can see what I’m doing
  7. Once everywhere is saturated let it process for 30 minutes to an hour – I try to keep the dye on for an hour total, so I let it process depending on how long it took me to actually apply it
  8. Rinse out the dye in the shower, making sure none is left on the scalp
  9. This is the most effective way I’ve found to tone my hair:
step out of the shower and mix your toner and developer and put in a bottle that you can pour out of easily
  10. Saturate your hair with the toner and hop back in the shower
I count to 120 from when I start pouring the toner on my head, I run my fingers through it and make sure it’s even before rinsing it out after 2 minutes
(The directions state that it can be left on for 30 minutes, but 2 minutes is the magic time I’ve found that gives me white toned hair without turning purple)
  11. Shampoo and condition hair as normal
  12. In the next days/weeks follow up with hair masks, treatments, and Olaplex to restore your hairs health

I always get asked questions like “who does your hair?” or “how much does it cost?” and people are always so shocked to find out I do it, for about $5 every 6 weeks. But it’s seriously so simple.

It is totally possible to fry your hair off, so I don’t recommend trying this if you’ve never done any DIY beauty treatments before, but if you have any questions feel free to reach out!!
